A bipartisan group of Michigan lawmakers just introduced a package of nine bills aimed at tackling our housing shortage. The goal? To cut through the "red tape" that makes building new homes so expensive.
What’s in the proposal?
More Density: The bills would allow duplexes to be built in areas currently zoned strictly for single-family homes.
Smaller Footprints: It would lower the minimum size requirements for housing units and reduce mandatory lot sizes.
Lower Costs: Proponents, like State Rep. Joseph Aragona, argue that over-regulation adds tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of a new home before a single brick is even laid.
The Debate: While lawmakers say this will help the "next generation" afford homes, groups like the Michigan Municipal League are wary of losing local control over zoning. They argue that financing gaps, not just zoning, are the real hurdle to affordability.
