🏛 FED Signals Pause on Rate Cuts

The FED over the last year dropped federal funds rate by a full point over the last year and after 3 consecutive cuts last year, the Fed has officially hit the "Pause." What does this mean for you?

  • If you are a buyer: I hate how cliche it sounds but date the rate marry the house. If you find the right house and the numbers are right, don't wait to buy when the rates come down because the next anticipated rate cut is in July. This strategy may backfire if home values go up.

  • If you are saving: High yield savings accounts should continue to remain at elevated rates. With the Fed pausing, banks won't be in a rush to slash APYs on savings accounts and CDs. You have a few more months to lock in ~4%+ yields before the cuts eventually resume in the summer.

  • For the Stock Market Bulls: The Fed didn't cut because the economy is actually doing okay (GDP is solid, jobs aren't collapsing). A strong economy is better for corporate earnings than a weak economy that requires rate cuts. Actionable Advice: Stay invested. Volatility is normal, but the recession fears of 2025 seem to be fading.

The Bottom Line: The Fed just hit the snooze button on rate cuts. Good news for your savings account, bad news if you were hoping for cheaper mortgage rates by spring. The next window for relief looks like June.

🧤 In Michigan: Ice, Hockey, and Festivals

This is arguably one of the busiest winter weekends of the year for the state. If you are willing to brave the cold, there is a lot happening.

  • Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche (Sat, Jan 31 @ 1:00 PM):

    • An "Original Six" style rivalry matinee at Little Caesars Arena. The Wings host the Avs in what is always a high-energy game. If you are downtown, expect traffic to be heavy early in the day.

  • The Festival Circuit (Final Weekend for Many):

    • Zehnder’s Snowfest (Frankenmuth): This is the big finale weekend. Massive snow sculptures and ice carving competitions are wrapping up. It’s the best time to go for photos before they start to melt next week.

    • Plymouth Ice Festival: Downtown Plymouth is taken over by ice carvings this weekend (Jan 30–Feb 1). It’s very walkable and great for families.

    • World of Winter (Grand Rapids): The Midwest's largest winter festival is in full swing. If you are on the west side of the state, check out the interactive art installations near the Blue Bridge.

  • Ann Arbor Folk Festival (Fri–Sat):

    • Hill Auditorium is hosting the second night of the festival on Saturday the 31st. A major cultural staple for the city.

🌍 Around the World: Finals and Torches

Globally, this weekend is the "calm before the storm" of February’s massive sporting events.

  • Australian Open Finals (Melbourne):

    • The first Grand Slam of 2026 concludes.

    • Women’s Final: Saturday, Jan 31 (early morning US time).

    • Men’s Final: Sunday, Feb 1. This is the big ticket item for sports fans this weekend.

  • Pre-Olympic Hype (Milano Cortina 2026):

    • We are exactly one week away from the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Italy (starts Feb 6). Expect news coverage to shift heavily toward the torch relay and athlete arrivals in Milan this weekend.

  • NFL "Bye Week":

    • There is no NFL football this Sunday. We are in the gap week before Super Bowl LX (60), which takes place next Sunday, Feb 8, at Levi's Stadium.

  • Lunar New Year Prep:

    • While the actual Lunar New Year falls later in February this cycle, celebrations and travel rushes in Asia are beginning to ramp up.
